Tracking your medications

It's a good idea to carry a list of the prescription medications, vitamins, supplements and over-the-counter medications you are currently taking. Ask both your primary doctor and your pharmacist to review your list regularly. Do you obtain medications from more than one doctor? Did you obtain and use each medication as prescribed? Some medications, including prescriptions and other over-the-counter items, may, when taken together, interact dangerously or may reduce effectiveness. It is important that you discuss the medications you take with your health care professionals.
A useful tool to help you create a list can be found at the link below, through SafeCare Wisconsin. WEA Trust is a member of this coalition, working to advance healthcare safety in Wisconsin.
In addition to possible drug interactions, be sure to ask additional questions about the medications you are taking, such as:
- Are there are any restrictions with your medications? For example, can you drive a vehicle while you are taking them?
- Are there any foods or beverages you should avoid when taking certain medications? For example, grapefruit juice is known to adversely affect some medications.
- Are there any adverse effects or side effects the medication can produce?
- How often, how long and at what time should the medications be taken?
- Is it advisable to become pregnant or breastfeed while on these medications?
- Are there generic alternatives to any of the prescription medications you are taking?
